Toxic Substances and Workers’ Compensation

One study showed that six of every 100 custodians have a lost-time injury each year as a result of exposure to a toxic chemical or substance.
• Cashiers and clerks—Cashiers and clerks typically handle thousands of register receipts over the course of a year without knowing that many of those are coated with a potentially harmful substance known as BPA (bisphenol-A).
• Salon workers—Hairdressers, nail artists and anyone else working in a salon or spa is exposed to toxic chemicals on a daily basis that could cause respiratory problems, skin allergies or even endocrine system problems.
• Construction workers—Construction workers may inadvertently come into contact with toxic substances when demolishing, repairing or renovating old buildings. Asbestos and lead paint, for example, are commonly found in older buildings or homes and can cause serious problems if inhaled or if a worker comes into direct contact with the substance.
