Neck & Back Injuries
Neck and back injuries are the most common kinds of workplace injury. In fact, back injuries are the number one workplace injury. They account for one of every five workplace injuries, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Neck and back injuries in the workplace may leave workers unable to perform jobs, require missed days from work or require a worker to be re-assigned.

What Jobs are Associated with Workplace Back and Neck Injuries?
Back and neck injuries occur in many different types of jobs. Workplace injuries to the back and neck can be caused by overexertion or repetitive motion. Many workers don’t realize that if they suffer a back or neck injury gradually from repetitive work-related activity, such as lifting heavy loads, that is an injury that qualifies for workers’ compensation. The risk of a back or neck workplace injury caused by lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling a load increases as a worker ages.
Construction work traditionally has had the highest workplace injury rate of any Massachusetts industry. Back injuries represent a significant portion of construction workplace injuries. The construction industry includes laborers, carpenters, masons, roofers, electricians, welders, plumbers and pipe fitters. In 2008, back injuries accounted for one fourth of all workplace injuries in the construction industry requiring days away from work. Manufacturing industry workers including production workers, assemblers, metal workers, plastic workers and material handlers, also recorded high rates of back injuries. One fifth of the injuries reported by Massachusetts manufacturing workers that required missed work days involved back injuries.
Workers in the physically demanding mining and natural resources sector, which includes agricultural workers, logging, commercial fishing, miners, quarry workers, dairy farmers and forestry workers, also record significant numbers of back and neck workplace injuries. About one out of seven injuries by these workers is an on-the-job back injury. Fork lift drivers also have high rates of neck injuries from the extreme head rotation required to operate a fork lift.
Keep in mind that a workplace neck or back injury can be caused by a single incident or by performing the same task repeatedly over a period of years. Both types of injury entitle an employee to workers’ compensation benefits.
What Workers’ Compensation Disability Benefits Are Available?
If you suffered a back or neck injury, you may be unable to work for an extended period. You may be eligible for temporary total disability, partial disability, or permanent and total disability benefits. A knowledgeable workers’ compensation attorney can review your neck or back injury and advise you about which benefits you may collect. Employee workers’ compensation benefits are determined by several factors, including your average weekly wage and your degree of incapacity from a workplace injury.
